Durham - Kingsgate Footbridge
Kingsgate Footbridge crosses the River Wear about halfway up the eastern arm of the U formed by the river as it loops around the centre of the city of Durham.
Approaching it from the west (city centre side) there are a flight of steps leading down to it.
Despite only dating from 1966 (designed by Sir Ove Nyquist Arup in 1963) it is nevertheless considered architecturally important enough to be EH Grade I listed LinkExternal link
It is constructed of reinforced concrete made with white cement, with Shap granite. The surfaces have been grit blasted. It won the Concrete Society Certificate of Outstanding Performance (Mature Structures Category) in 1993.
River Wear

The River Wear flows generally eastward from its source in the Northern Pennines to its mouth at Sunderland. It is 60 miles long. Major settlements on the river are Durham and Sunderland.
