Knockaderry House, Newcastle West, Co. Limerick (1)
A fascinating old building with many fine features. Described as a detached three-bay two-storey former country house of c.1780, it was the ancient seat of the D'Arcy family, and was the birthplace in 1896 of the early Irish aviator Sophia Theresa Catherine Mary Peirce-Evans (aka Sophie Peirce), later to be known as Lady Mary Heath, and Ireland's first female aviator. The house has a somewhat lurid history, and was the scene of a murder in the 1890s when Sophie's father John Peirce Evans was tried in 1897 for the murder of his wife, Sophie's mother: Link
