Path through Smardale Nature Reserve
The 6km long linear nature reserve is reclaimed from the former South Durham & Lancashire Union Railway trackbed and surrounds. The railway was designed by Sir Thomas Bouch, primarily for moving materials associated with iron & steel production in Barrow-In-Furness and Teesside. The railway closed in 1962.
