Gatehouse to All Souls College
Gatehouse to All Souls College
The four storey mid-15th century gatehouse tower to All Souls College. Viewed from Oxford's High Street. The figures either side of the first floor window are King Henry VI on the left and Archbishop Henry Chichele on the right, both founders of All Souls College. The niche above contains a carving of the Resurrection of the Dead. The figures were all replaced in 1939. The college was founded with a chantry to pray for all the souls of those who died in the Hundred Years War against France.
All Souls College

All Souls College, Oxford (official name: The Warden and the College of the Souls of All Faithful People Deceased in the University of Oxford) is a constituent college of the University of Oxford . Founded in 1438 by Henry VI.

Unique to All Souls, all of its members automatically become Fellows (i.e., full members of the College's governing body). It has no undergraduate members, but each year recent graduates of Oxford and other universities are eligible to apply for Examination Fellowships through a competitive examination and interview process (once described as "the hardest exam in the world")
