In this case ER relates to Edward VII. The distances painted on seem improbable; they should indicate the distance away from the face of marker of the buried cable, but as this would put them out into the river, it seems unlikely. However, the figures would represent very closely the height above sea level when compared to neighbouring bench marks, and it seems likely that when the marker was painted it was assumed erroneously to have been a bench mark
