First World War training trenches
Around 1400m of trenches were dug in 1915 by troops from the Grenadier Guards.
With the Welsh Guards, Royal Engineers and Royal Army Medical Corps, who were all billeted at the nearby Bovingdon Green Camp, they trained in the trenches during 1915 and 1916, in preparation for going to the front lines.
Many features such as machine gun posts, fire bays and forward trenches have been identified. The 'front line' was probably on the west side.
Among the many pre-WW1 training camps, this is the most complete set of trenches left in England.
