The King Charles III England Coast Path (ECP) will take advantage of new public rights of access to the coast, to form a 2,800 mile long public path right around England's coasts.
Parts of the path were already open in 2016, and it was intended at that time that the whole path would be completed by 2020. At that time, the path was called the England Coast Path. It was renamed King Charles III England Coast Path in 2023, in honour of the King's coronation.
More information about the ECP is on the National Trails website: Link
A large area of the foreshore and sea off the coast between Drigg and Hycemoor is designated as the Eskmeals Gunnery Range. It was originally opened by the naval shipbuilders Vickers, Sons and Maxim (subsequently they became the submarine builders Vickers-Armstrongs at Barrow in Furness) for testing artillery during WWI, and then came under the control of the formal armed forces, before transferring to the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency DERA, then subsequently to a spun-off business called QinetiQ. It specialises in range and accuracy trials for artillery, with no access allowed onto the main part of the site during operating hours (for obvious reasons). Outwith those hours, the seashore in front of the range is accessible, and the areas to north and south are fine so long as you respect any warning signs and flags. Just don't touch anything you can't identify...
The Cumbria Wildlife Trust leases much of the neighbouring dune system to the north of the firing range as a nature reserve, which supports a variety of rare and not-so-rare animal & plant species. Public access to this reserve is signed from a path near the railway viaduct, and is available outside of the range operational hours.
