Moor Abbey another view - Galbally, County Tipperary
Here by a roadside in the Glen of Aherlow stand the prominent remains of Moor Abbey, aka (also known as) Galbally Friary. One of Ireland's National Monuments it was founded in the 13th century. In 1471 a new church was built on this site but was burned down in 1472. The last monks left here for Mitchelstown in 1748 and the site fell into ruins. In the early 1920s the Royal Irish Constabulary attempted to demolish the remains but failed. It stands here today as a mute reminder across the centuries. The sign reads 'NO OVERNIGHT PARKING'. Time photo taken not available.
