Trams returned to Edinburgh's streets in 2014 after an absence of nearly 60 years. The project to build the new tram system did not go smoothly. Costs rose and a proposed extension of the route from the centre of Edinburgh to Leith had to be shelved. The initial tram line links Edinburgh city centre with the airport, to the west of the city.

In Edinburgh city centre, the trams run on-street. Outside the city centre, they run on segregated track.
