Across the Hole of Horcum
Across the Hole of Horcum
A view eastwards across the steep flanks of this huge depression. As viewers will know, the hole was formed when the giant Wade became annoyed with his wife and scooped out a huge clod of earth to throw at her. He missed and the earth landed some 2 miles to the east, forming Blakey Topping, An early example of matrimonial disharmony. However, another theory is that seepage from numerous springs, probably aided by freeze-thaw towards the end of the ice age caused the erosion, which is on a massive scale. The hilltop opposite carries the A169 and a few vehicles can just be seen there.
