The soda water spring on Foxcovert Road - alternatively written as Fox Covert Road - is located next to a former level crossing on the Peterborough to Lincoln railway line which is now only accessible via a footbridge. According to the information board at the site, the spring was acquired in 1902 by local fruiterer Herbert Neaverson. He began producing bottled spring water at the site and established the Glinton Artesian Water Company Limited in November 1914. The water was sold under the Sobrite brand name, which was formally registered in January 1915.
Neaverson established a syndicate under the name Hydrox to market the spring water in May 1922. A special grotto was built to house the spring. Neaverson died in 1952. Hydrox ceased trading in 1955 and the mineral water spring was demolished after the site was acquired by Adcock's, a Peterborough-based soft drinks manufacturer.
The site was subsequently used as a distribution depot by the consumer goods manufacturer Reckitt and Colman. The depot was demolished in 1989 and the spring was covered in concrete although the water continued to flow into a dyke. The area around the spring was landscaped with trees by Peterborough City Council in the mid-1990s. The soda water spring was restored and inaugurated in September 2014. A sign at the site warns that the water is no longer suitable for drinking because of the risk of contamination by pesticide residues from the surrounding fields.
A Class 66 diesel-electric locomotive operated by GB Railfreight (GBRf) hauling a container freight train can be seen in the background passing the former level crossing on Foxcovert Road, which links Werrington on the northern periphery of Peterborough with the villages of Glinton and Peakirk. Foxcovert Crossing was closed to motor traffic in the 1980s. A footbridge was erected in 2014 to replace the previous pedestrian gates.
