Wolston Village Hall
The Village Hall faces onto Main Street. The terracotta panel above the first floor window reads:
ROYAL EQUITY LODGE
No. 2565
M.U.
ODDFELLOWS HALL
AD1890
According to Tom Walton, in his memoir Wolston Remembered, the hall was built by Walter Fitter of Brandon Link
. MU stands for Manchester Unity, a friendly society founded in 1810, though the Oddfellows are first recorded in London in 1730. Many trades had friendly societies practising charity, helping members in need, and providing social events; the most common explanation for the name Oddfellows is that they catered to men whose trade did not have its own society. The building became the village hall in 1954. See Wikipedia on Oddfellows Link
and the Wolston Village Community Website on the village hall. Link
