Where Trees Embrace a Relic of Industry
Where Trees Embrace a Relic of Industry
Amidst a lush forest, which was initially established as a land reclamation effort in 1886, lies a remarkable remnant from the past an enduring pumping engine house from Scremerston Colliery. This stone structure, constructed in 1840 for the Commissioners of Greenwich Hospital, stands as a testament to the mining activity that may have taken place in Scremerston as far back as the 17th century. Notably, the elevated water tank atop the roof serves as a visible reminder of the building's later modifications.
