The Prince of Wales's feathers
The story is that in the 1860s when on a grouse shooting trip to Weardale, the then Prince of Wales, later Edward VII, visited St. John's Chapel and gave the town his personal coat of arms. When the original town hall was built some time later, the coat of arms was carved in stone and placed on the gable end. Unfortunately, the whole building was destroyed by fire in the early 1950s (but was quickly rebuilt). Then in 1981, the year of the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer, a local man made a reproduction of the original coat of arms to adorn his market stall. These arms (in the photo) were subsequently placed on a wall inside the town hall.
