Mayo Statue, Main Street, Cockermouth
Grade II Listed Statue. The statue is a prominent landmark on Main Street in Cockermouth. It is a statue of Richard Southwell Bourke (1822-1872), sixth Earl of Mayo, who was MP for Cockermouth from 1857 to 1867. In 1869 he becomes the fourth Viceroy of India where he is locally often referred to as “Lord Mayo" and served until his death. While visiting the convict settlement at Port Blair in the Andaman Islands in 1872 for the purpose of inspection, he is assassinated by Sher Ali Afridi, an Afridi Pathan convict who uses a knife. The Sicilian marble statue was erected in 1875, designed by W & T Wills of London and the 800-guinea cost was raised by public subscription. In May 1874 it was reported that the statue was due to be in position by June but the sculptor Mr Wills said that due to unavoidable delays it wouldn't be ready until August. The statue was hit by an oil tanker in 1964 and was pieced together and refixed by Walker Bros (Cockermouth) Ltd.
