Hunter's, 43A Main Street, Cockermouth
It is not clear why but it is Grade II Listed with the former Barclay's Bank and the Brown Cow. Looking into the recent past, in 2009 it was carrying a sign as 'Hunters' and in 2010 it was getting a face lift. In 2017 there was a sales board on the wall. It was reported in July 2020 that the pub was to reopen, refurbished, that month as 'The Huntsman', its old name. In July 2022 it looked to be open but Google now has it 'Permanently closed'. It seems to have reverted to its previous name as my June 2023 photo shows it has no external signs but it has had another facelift and has a board on the pavement advertising it as 'Hunters' with a happy hour and quiz night and the pub has a current Premises Licence. J. Bernard Bradbury’s booklet “Cockermouth in Pictures (10) Inns and Taverns” (1993) advises that the Huntsman was named ‘The Unicorn’ prior to 1830 and is on a list of pubs in 1811. A search of my directories produced; 1828 John Hodgson Unicorn; 1847 Ben Martin Hunstman Inn (no.124); 1858 John Neven Huntsman; 1873 Joseph James (& tailor & draper); 1887 John Jenkinson; 1894 George Dargavel; 1897 Mrs Martha Sealby; 1906-1910 John Robinson Bell (no.41); 1914 William Power King still the Huntsman (no.41).
