Berkeley Square building, Princess Street, Plymouth
Berkeley Square building, Princess Street, Plymouth
The name reflects the fact that the building was originally built for Barclays Bank as part of the post-war reconstruction of the city centre. Designed in 1949, it was built to 3 storeys; intended to have two further storeys for commercial letting, these were never built. This view shows the statue of an ARP warden, reflecting the blitz of 1941.

After the bank relinquished the building in the early 21st century, it was completely redesigned, reopening in 2009. The ground floor, including the banking hall, was converted to restaurants and the upper floors converted to flats. The intended extra floors were added, as flats, and to a radically different and contemporary style.

Listed Grade II.
