Holy Trinity and St Constantine Church, Waterside Road, Wetheral
Grade II* Listed Church with 19th century clock. Nothing seems to exist from its Norman foundation, the present building dates largely from the 13th and early 16th centuries. The nave was heightened shortly before the dissolution and refurbished in Victorian times. The present octagonal part of the tower dates from 1882 (Samuel Bough painting shows it square in 1845) but the date of the original square tower is given as 1760 and 1790 in various reports. In 1791 a Gothic-style chapel was built over the mausoleum of the Howards of Corby Castle. The chapel was built by Henry Howard to house a memorial to his wife, Lady Maria Howard, who died tragically in childbirth at the age of only 22. Sculptor Joseph Nollekens created a life-sized likeness of his wife in white marble and William Wordsworth was moved to write a sonnet to the Howard Memorial. The three bells are John Taylor & Co 1897, Burgess & Hayton 1833 and John Taylor & Co 1882 (service).
