Grade II Listed pre-grouping metal footbridge. A notable feature of many North Eastern Railway stations was the cast iron footbridge connecting adjacent platforms of ordinary double track stations. This cast iron footbridge design was introduced in 1891 and about 50 are believed to have been built. The bridges all have a 41ft central span but the disposition of the steps could be varied according to local requirements. Newcastle & Carlisle Railway was formed in 1825 and began operating mineral trains in 1834 and passengers the following year with the line fully opened in 1839. The railway was absorbed by the North Eastern Railway in 1862.
