Grade II Listed station buildings, now a private house. Formerly ticket office, clerk's office, waiting rooms and station master's house. 1835-38, probably by Benjamin Green for the Newcastle & Carlisle Railway, with 1880's additions for North Eastern Railway that included adding an additional storey to the house. The station was opened in July 1836, following the opening of the Railway between Greenhead and Carlisle London Road. Following the Beeching Axe, the station closed in January 1967 but was formally re-opened by British Railways on 5 October 1981. Newcastle & Carlisle Railway was formed in 1825 and began operating mineral trains in 1834 and passengers the following year with the line fully opened in 1839. The railway was absorbed by the larger North Eastern Railway in 1862. It is on what is known as the Tyne Valley Line.
