The plaque reads "EMPEROR HADRIAN / In this area for the building of Roman Wall / A.D. 122 - 128 / This statue was purchased and erected by / BRAMPTON CHAMBER OF TRADE / for the people of Brampton / April 1999". What is now known as Hadrian's Wall passed to the north of Brampton, though little survives locally. Brampton didn’t exist at that time, and is thought to have been founded in the 7th century as an Anglian settlement. The name derives from the Old English 'Brōm-tūn', meaning town or settlement where broom grew.
