The gatekeeper or hedge brown butterfly (Pyronia tithonus) gets its name because after fluttering around on flowers it settles on a flat surface with its wings open. This makes it easy to photograph. This one had been flitting along mint flowers in a domestic herb garden. Because it does not have a dark patch on its upper wing I believe this is a female - see Wikipedia LinkExternal link . That article says adults emerge in July and peak in early August, indeed photographs in Geograph are mainly taken in July and August, so far just one mid-June and one early September. Map of locations of Geograph photos also agrees with distribution described in Wikipedia, our furthest North are around Liverpool and Leeds.
