The Elephant Wash, Leamington Spa
The Elephant Wash, Leamington Spa
A ramp of stone setts leads down to the River Leam, where the Victorian elephant trainer Sam Lockhart washed his three elephants. He had been born into a circus family in Leamington in 1850 and had a circus a little further down the river, where the Loft Theatre stands now. The elephants were washed in the river nearby, but complaints from worshippers at the parish church led to the construction of this wash further east in the 1880s. A sculpture of three bronze elephants has been placed in the Jephson Gardens, across the river, while the electricity substation visible on the right has been painted with elephant and water designs. On Lockhart and his elephants see the Our Warwickshire site LinkExternal link .
