Kibble Palace 1968, before restoration
When this photo was taken in 1968 the ironwork of the 19th Century glasshouse in the botanic gardens was corroded. It was closed from 2004 to 2006 for complete dismantling and reconstruction. Shepley Engineers website LinkExternal link describes how they "were commissioned to completely dismantle the Palace and remove all the parts to our workshop in Yorkshire, where salvageable parts underwent specialised repair and others were re-cast. The ironwork and glass were then reassembled over a rearranged floorplan to give the Palace a prolonged life, reopening in 2006."
In this photo visitors are sitting outside on benches, all wearing coats and hats, so it must have been sunny but cold.
