St Mary's Church & churchyard
St Mary's Church & churchyard
This church dates from the 12th century, but mostly from the 14th. The base of the tower is from the earlier period, but the rest is later. This area, called High Church, was the main part of the town in the early middle ages, but then the area on the north side of the river was developed. The church became more isolated and eventually, in 1846, another parish church, St George's, was built in the town centre to supplement this one.
