taken 3 years ago, near to Bourne, Lincolnshire, England

Fomitopsis betulina
Fomitopsis betulina
E bracket fungus growing on a juvenile silver birch. This is the Birch Polyphore, at an early stage of eruption. Later the upper surface will turn orangey-brown.

This site tells how ancient humans would use the fungus to transport fire from one place to another: LinkExternal link
