Castle Street, Carlisle
The north end of Castle Street opposite Carlisle Castle, at the junction with Finkle Street and Annetwell Street and adjacent to the main entrance of Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery.
The tall capped wood posts are a millennium art installation and together with pavement inscriptions are intended to provide a visual link for pedestrians between the city centre, Carlisle Castle and Bitts Park. Both of the posts visible in this photograph are inscribed Luguvalium, the Roman name for Carlisle.
Note the yellow EWS (emergency water supply) sign dating from the Second World War on the wall to the left of the Castle Hairdressing Room (photograph NY3956 : Emergency Water Supply).
Northbound Cumbria Way walkers nearing the end of the long distance path from Ulverston, who have approached along Annetwell Street turn right here into Castle Street (next photograph NY3956 : Castle Street, Carlisle).
