Emergency Water Supply
Emergency Water Supply
More than 78 years after the end of the Second World War, the yellow emergency water supply sign painted on the corner of Finkle Street and Castle Street still proclaims its message. The sign was intended to direct fire engine pump crews to the nearest readily available source of water in the event of air raids by German bombers.
Local authorities were required to identify and provide emergency water supplies in case mains water was disrupted by bombing. The supplies could be existing rivers or streams, but in many cases specially constructed tanks were used.
