This building opened as the Bijou News-Reel cinema in Feb 1937. It closed in 1968 and reopened the same year as the Tyneside Film Theatre. That closed in 1975 but it reopened in 1976 as the Tyneside Cinema - a fabulous independent Arts cinema with a wonderful Art Deco tea room. For the last 18 months or so the cinema has been closed (relocated to the Old Town Hall, Gateshead) and undergoing full interior refurbishment and some significant restoration back to the glory of the original Art Deco tiles etc. The exterior shows the new and extended roof space - reopens to the public in May 2008.
