An area of the Royal Park where orators have engaged in free speech for hundreds of years. Historic figures who have appeared here include Karl Marx, Lenin, George Orwell and the suffragettes. More recently, the likes of Vanessa Redgrave and Harold Pinter led protests against the war in Iraq.

Nearby is the site of the Tyburn Gallows where up to 50,000 prisoners had been executed over the centuries until its closure and the abandonment of the spectacle of public executions. Those condemned had the right to speak here in their own defence.
