Leamington's famous Elephant Wash
Leamington's famous Elephant Wash
This is Royal Leamington Spa's 'Elephant Wash' in the River Leam. The first elephant trainer in England was Sam Lockhart, who was a member of the famous Lockhart circus family. He acquired three elephants in Ceylon (Sri Lanka today) and would wash them here in the river. However, when bathing in the river their trumpeting disturbed local worshippers at the nearby church. As a consequence this dedicated elephant wash was built a little further away from the church.
