The WS monogram refers to William Smith, the owner of the brewery at the time of its building. It became the John Smith's Tadcaster Brewery Company Limited only in 1892. See Link for location

The brewery was founded in 1758 although the name John Smith's only dates from 1852. Its buildings and ornate chimney (all grade 2 listed) dominate the town.
