Chartwell was Winston and Clementine Churchill's home from 1924 to his death in 1965. It now comes under the National Trust and was first opened to the public in the summer of 1966.

Although this room's use changed over time, including as a cinema in the years after the Second World War, it is here shown in its pre-war guise as the Churchill's dining room. Chartwell was never the place that large numbers of visitors were hosted at one time. Instead guests were carefully selected, typically for their ability to offer conversation on subjects from history and politics to literature and art.

The large arched windows offered views across the valley to the woods on the other side. The tables are round to ensure that no guests were excluded from conversation.
