This Class 66 diesel-electric locomotive no. 66709 "Sorento" operated by GB Railfreight (GBRf) is seen here passing the former level crossing on Foxcovert Road, which links Werrington on the northern periphery of Peterborough with the villages of Glinton and Peakirk. The crossing is located on the Great Northern Great Eastern (GNGE) line, an 86-mile (134.4-kilometre) route connecting Peterborough with Lincoln and Doncaster.
The locomotive carries the branding of Mediterranean Shipping Company (UK) Ltd. (MSC). GBRf began supplying rail services to MSC in 2002 and the two companies announced in May 2021 that they were renewing their partnership for a further five years with the aim of providing sustainable, low-carbon logistics solutions for their customers.
Foxcovert Crossing was closed to motor traffic in the 1980s. A footbridge was erected in 2014 to replace the previous pedestrian gates.
The two bridges in the background spanning Foxcovert Road (left) and the railway line (right) carry the A15 Werrington bypass, which was opened in the late 1980s.
