The Marlborough Terrace and Pavilion at Chartwell
Chartwell was Winston and Clementine Churchill's home from 1924 to his death in 1965. It now comes under the National Trust and was first opened to the public in the summer of 1966.
This is the Marlborough Terrace and Pavilion so called after the pavilion on the left which was decorated in 1934 with paintings relating to the Duke of Marlborough's life. Winston Churchill had a lifelong admiration for his ancestor John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough and victor of the Battle of Blenheim in 1704. When the Churchill's returned to Chartwell after the Second World War, the paintings had deteriorated and in 1934, Clementine had them repainted in time for Winston's 75th birthday.
The Marlborough Terrace was where family and friends came to read and relax during the summer months.
