SO7416 : Level Crossing near Ley Court
Manually operated gates. Just ring the bell and assitance in dayglow jacket does the business.
On e of three along this stretch of the main line, plus a fourth on the former Hereford line that used to be worked in this way, with the exception of the hi-vis attire until more recent times!
They were all supervised from Grange Court Junction
SO7216 : Grange Court Junction. Interesting to see that this one has survived.
The others are at Broken Cross, now relegated to a DIY type farm crossing and the crossing keeper's house long since demolished:
SO7316 : Gloucester to South Wales Railway Line
and the other one on the the main line is at Westbury, now upgraded to normal road crossing.
SO7115 : Railway to South Wales.
The lane across Westbury crossing then continues into Northward Green, where it crossed the former Hereford line at
Church Lane Crossing. The crossing keeper here finished when passenger services ceased on 31st October 1964.
None of the crossing keeper's houses had mains water, and it was a feature of some local trains, up until the 1960s at least, that they would stop to drop off a daily supply of drinking water to each crossing!
