This building was formerly occupied by the Tyne Steam Packet Provident Society, a worker's co-operative organisation, a forerunner of the Trade Unions. The inscription at the top of the building’s facade states that the Society was established in 1853 and that the building was erected in 1897, the year when Queen Victoria celebrated her Diamond Jubilee, the 60th anniversary of her accession to the throne.
