Former Jetty (Lloyd's Hailing Station), North Shields
Named on the Ordnance Survey Six-Inch map of the area published in 1899 as a 'Jetty', this was once Lloyd's Hailing Station where a record was kept of the ships leaving and entering the River Tyne. Built in 1902 by Lloyds of London it was staffed by a worker who would shout to passing skippers, from a small hut at the extreme end of the jetty, "What ship where bound?". The hailing station finally closed in 1969. This is the same jetty as shown at Link although showing it from the other side. Despite being three years apart, the photographs both clearly show how the jetty is well utilised by a large number of cormorants.
