Marsh Mill, Thornton
Marsh Mill, Thornton
Tower mill and attached drying kiln. Mill dated 1794, by Ralph Slater.
Altered c1850 and in 1896, extensive repair in 1964, and restored to full working order 1986-90. Drying kiln fully rebuilt 1988-89. Six storeys with four patent sails and winding by fantail. The sails are now turned by an electric motor drive. The interior contains four sets of stones, a jogscry (shaking sieve) and a wire machine. Visited as part of Heritage Open Days with a guided tour. This view is on the grain floor or 5th storey and shows the wooden vertical shaft turning in its transparent casing. It is now actually transmitting power up to turn the sails as the input from the motor is onto the great spur wheel.
