Marsh Mill, Thornton - inside the cap
Tower mill and attached drying kiln. Mill dated 1794, by Ralph Slater.
Altered c1850 and in 1896, extensive repair in 1964, and restored to full working order 1986-90. Drying kiln fully rebuilt 1988-89. Six storeys with four patent sails and winding by fantail. The sails are now turned by an electric motor drive. The interior contains four sets of stones, a jogscry (shaking sieve) and a wire machine. Visited as part of Heritage Open Days with a guided tour. This is the view through the dust floor, sixth storey, into the cap. The wallower at the top of the mainshaft is closest with the metal windshaft and brake wheel above.
