The site where Windmill Hill City Farm is now, was home to a community of factories, houses, shops and workshops. This community was bombed during World War II. Other buildings were demolished in 1960. In the 1970s the 'Dustbin Group' was set up by local residents, frustrated the area was undeveloped and derelict. The council wanted the area to be a lorry park but the residents wanted to protect the environment by building a farm. An event was held in September 1976 by the residents to show they wanted a farm on this site. During 1977-1978 a team of volunteers cleared the site. A derelict building on site (previously Den Hope Auto Engineers) was renovated to provide a workshop and farm shop. By 1979 Windmill Hill was a working farm, with rabbits, ponies and chickens among the animals.
