The park was officially opened by Prince Arthur of Connaught, the seventh child of Queen Victoria, in August 1868. It was built on land bought by Henry Bolckow the first mayor of Middlesbrough. It is named for Prince Albert the husband of the Queen. The park has a Green Flag Award which recognises standards of good management and best-practice in green spaces. The park is Grade II listed. There are several Grade II listed artifacts in or on the boundary of the park.
