A significant part of North Shields town centre is pedestrianised and is dominated by The Beacon Shopping Centre a partly-covered shopping mall which was constructed in the late 1970s and originally named The Bedford Centre. This entrance, which faces onto Bedford Street is one of two entrances to the centre, the other one facing onto Northumberland Square next to the library.
