The Exchange forms part of the former North Shields Municipal Complex which once comprised the town hall, the police station, the Board of Guardians, the Mechanics Institute, the post office and the Tynemouth County Borough Council Offices. It was built between 1837-1894, to designs by John and Benjamin Green, John Dobson and the then Borough Surveyors. It styles include Neo-Tudor, Elizabethan and Gothic. The complex is Grade II Listed. The Exchange 1856 describes itself as being a hub for entertainment, music, community, social, food & drink, exhibitions, business & health & well-being. This courtyard provides an outside seating area for customers of The Exchange 1856.
