In 2009 the river bank was overgrown on both sides SJ8990 : River Goyt. In 2018 a new wider road was constructed on Knightsbridge and the bank at the left side was cleared SJ8990 : River Goyt at Portwood. A path was constructed to allow access to the bottom of the bank SJ8990 : River Goyt at Knightsbridge. Whilst opened up SJ8990 : Opening up the riverbank it wasn't publicly accessible and by 2021 it was looking very overgrown again SJ8990 : River Goyt from Park Bridge, Portwood. In 2023 it had been tidied up somewhat remained overgrown SJ8990 : River Goyt. Now the left bank has been mainly cleared.

The Goyt rises on the moors of Axe Edge, near the Cat and Fiddle Inn. It runs from the Errwood and Fernilee reservoirs, north of Buxton to Stockport where it joins the River Tame Link to form the Mersey.

It is also fed by the River Etherow which flows from the Woodhead reservoirs and joins near Marple Bridge, the River Sett which joins at New Mills and Todd Brook which joins at Horwich End.
