Kingsgate Bridge, a footbridge over the River Wear, was opened in 1963. It connects the old part of Durham (containing the Castle, Cathedral, and older parts of the university) with the south-east of the city. In particular it provides a link to Dunelm House, seen here, the Durham Students' Union (see also NZ2742 : Dunelm House, University of Durham).
Apparently the bridge was built in two sections parallel to the river banks, and then each was rotated by 90° to meet in the middle. The engineers must have prayed that they had measured the distance across the river correctly!
NZ2742 : The 3rd Marquis of Londonderry (and 2 monkeys) Schoolboy legend in County Durham had it that the Italian sculptor was so proud of his work that he declared it 'perfect'. Then, when some waif pointed out the horse had no tongue, he committed suicide! Since then Durham University students have been known to paint the poor creature red on 'Rag Day'.
