Ordnance Survey documents indicate that a benchmark was levelled at 117.579 feet above Liverpool Datum on a gatepost at the left hand side of this gateway during the 1843/4 Kendal to Carlisle 1GL Survey . I suspect the entrance may have been remodelled with the gateway set further back from the main road. The surveyor's description was 'No. 331. Mark on pier of gate at East side of road ; 3.95 ft. above surface'
