Grieve's Stairs, Lower Bedford Street, North Shields
First shown on the Ordnance Survey Six-Inch Map published in 1898 these steep stairs connected Lower Bedford Street with what was then known as East Ropery Banks. The stairs were named after the handsome Grieve's Building which abuts the stairs on the left hand side facing upwards. The building was designed by local architect F.R.N.Haswell and was once occupied by Grieve's Ironmonger, a firm specialised in supplying materials to ships based at, or visiting, North Shields.
