Butterknowle main street
Butterknowle main street
An interesting linear village which grew in the late 19th century thanks to the discovery of coal in the vicinity. The first edition OS map of 1859 shows Butterknowle Colliery and Black Diamond Colliery, but virtually no development of housing nearby. The 1898 map shows some development along this street with the Royal Oak Inn [behind camera] and Miners Hall [ditto] shown. By 1921 the map shows two inns and a school, but that must have been at the end of the coal mining era as industries shown on that map include a brick works and quarry, but no mine.
