Here is buried a man distinguished outstandingly with very great gifts of mind and body - William Draper, Knight of the Bath, educated at Eton, then at King's College, Cambridge as both undergraduate and Fellow, he graced both positions by his character and his studies, yet by nature he was given the kind of mind that delighted in academic matters as a retirement hobby. He gave himself wholeheartedly to military honour and in different parts of Europe and Asia he earned his salary. In Western India in 1758 he was in command of the Royal Army and defended for a long time and with bravery the citadel of St George which was being besieged by the French. At last when a sally happened he drove back the enemy troops by taking the prefect of the legion captive. In 1762 when the Hispanic War was happening, he was both the originator and the leader of an expedition against Manila. To those who were fighting him he left no doubt that the name of Britain was superior, but he was also distinguished by his clemency. Farewell, most firm of leaders, quietly liberal! Farewell. This is a token of your virtues handed down by young men who witnessed your friendship and thence to posterity. He died in AD 1787 Aged 66 in the year of Christ.
More than any other in the UK

They say Bath Abbey has more memorials than any other church in the UK: that is a big claim for any building to make. However, memorials are my thing and I have never seen so many. Enormous ones, tiny ones; old ones, the more modern; the greatest of the great, the well travelled, those who have never strayed far from this fair city- they are all here. At well over 600, this magnificent place of worship is only surpassed by the outdoor National Memorial Arboretum. It is a MUST Visit (to the power of must visits)
